What is project management, really? It is the process of identifying all of the tasks, resources, and constraints of an individual or group to achieve a specific goal. The planning phase of a project will determine the completion date, providing that everything happens perfectly.
There a number of methodologies associated with project management. In reality, proper project management is a hybrid of many of these frameworks. That is the real world.
Trying to plan to a specific date is, simply speaking, asking for trouble. The requirements define the completion date. Not the other way around.
Let's apply the "Specific Project Completion Date"model to cooking. Let's say that it takes 30 minutes to roast 2 pounds of pork loin roast. But you need it in 5 minutes. See any potential problems here? Food poisoning, trichinosis, or other less than desirable outcomes can, and will, occur. The same thing is true for project. If you fail to plan, then plan to fail.
To cook is to live
We learn much of our cooking skills emperically over time. Moms and Dads show us how to fix their dishes and grandparents teach us their traditions. After that formal technique becomes important. I have been lucky enough to be able to learn some of my techniques at l'Ecole de Ritz Essoffier and Le Cordon Bleu, both in Paris.
Creating hearty dishes based on classic European recipes is my forte. I have traveled Europe extensively in search of the next great recipe.
